Coates 1989 LICKPIT/LYCHPIT, farm in Basing From Old English 'licapytt'='corpse pit'. Early spellings point to an analogical palatalized genitive plural of 'lic' viz. hypothetical 'licea' unless the 'e' simply marks the palatality of the 'c' in 'lic'. The source of the corpses is unknown; Gover suggests it was a plague pit, but local tradition associates it with the aftermath of the Danish victory at the battle of Basing in 871. |
